Fire Alarms, Bad Timing, and Me in Shorts

I'll post a picture here of my cat being mesmerized by the snow -
simply because I refuse to show a picture of me in my shorts.

I like to take late lunches - around 1pm. I don't actually eat lunch, though. I go to the gym. I get to the gym at around 1:10pm today and get on the treadmill. I'm taking it slow - a nice brisk walk about to start jogging. But wait.

Fire alarm. Great, somebody's burnt their f-ing popcorn again.

Runner of the gym, "Everybody grab their stuff, we have to get outside."

I grab a towel and my bag.

My current outfit: Running shorts, running shoes, my Pitt Basketball shirt.

Current Weather in DC: 26 (F), feels like 15 (F). Light snow.

Yes, that's right. I had to go stand outside wrapped in a towel in shorts and a t-shirt in freezing weather (and snow). I met up with my fellow co-workers and laughed about the situation, all the while refusing people's offers for jackets. Surprisingly, I wasn't cold. I just felt great, however, looking like the asshole in shorts in the middle of winter.

In the end, I accepted a hat, gloves, and a jacket from a wonderful woman that went to her car and got the jacket for me. I wrapped the towel around my legs - yeah, I looked like I had just ran out of the shower - and suffered through the cold. My favorite part was when the wind blew, and the snow would hit my face. Great stuff right there.

We were outside for 30 minutes. I did not work out afterwards.

So a great thank you to the person that burned their popcorn, yet again. I will send you a bill for my copay when I have to go to the doctor with pneumonia.

Asshole.

We Have a Nice Neighbor!!!

Walking downstairs to the store last night, a uniformed gentleman and his young son with a green truck were walking down the hall as well. I decided that I was going to look this guy straight in the eye and say hello.

"Hi," I say.

"Hey! How's it going?" he asks.... wait, he did more than a grunt? Yes, yes he did.

"Good, thanks. You?" I respond.. still a little shocked.

"Good, thanks."

And we walk on... As I'm walking towards the stairwell I hear his little boy say, "Who was that daddy?"

"Our neighbor," he explains. Wait, he just called me his neighbor? That's preposterous! Nobody has ever called me their neighbor!

"What's her name?" the little boy asked.

"I dunno," his dad replies.

"Me neither!" the little boy says, sounding a little concerned.

Next time I see them I will introduce myself to our neighbors.

It's not horribly hilarious, but it's so good to know that at least someone on our floor considers us neighbors. That rocks. And it sounds like that little boy would like to know my name. Read more...

Kids Say the Darndest Things

Daddy, when I was at school, I heard mommy talking to me in my heart.

I overheard this statement from a young little girl on the train ride home last night. It was a comment that was overheard by many in the crowded train. Looking around, I saw most people smiling, something that is rare on the many metro rides home. You can jump to a number of conclusions in regards to what the little girl was talking about (eg. where is her mom?), but just the raw, sincerity in this little girl's voice - and how seriously she explained this feeling that she had warmed my heart in the most comforting way. All the irritating people and circumstances from my day vanished. That's a good little girl right there.
